ASTM美國材料實驗協會（American Society of Testing Materials ）前身是國際材料試驗協會（International Association for Testing Materials, IATM）。

    19世紀80年代，為解決采購商與供貨商在購銷工業材料過程中產生的意見和分歧，有人提出建立技術委員會制度，由技術委員會組織各方面的代表參加技術座談會，討論解決有關材料規范、試驗程序等方面的爭議問題。

    ASTM是美國最老、最大的非盈利性的標準學術團體之一。經過一個世紀的發展，ASTM現有33669個（個人和團體）會員，其中有22396個主要委員會會員在其各個委員會中擔任技術專家工作。ASTM的技術委員會下共設有2004個技術分委員會。有105817個單位參加了ASTM標準的制定工作，主要任務是制定材料、產品、系統、和服務等領域的特性和性能標準，試驗方法和程序標準，促進有關知識的發展和推廣。
